  • They planned a honeymoon to Sohra (Cherrapunji), Meghalaya, after ruling out Kashmir due to security concerns.

  • The couple arrived in Meghalaya around May 20, staying at a scenic homestay in Nongriat village.

However, the romantic getaway turned deadly. On May 23, the couple went missing. Their rented scooter was later found abandoned on the Sohra–Shillong road. After a week-long intensive search operation, involving local police and NDRF drones, Raja’s body was recovered from Wei Sawdong Falls on June 2, his throat slit and face disfigured.

3: Sonam’s Mysterious Disappearance and Shocking Return

: The Dhaba Discovery in Ghazipur

Just as questions were mounting about her whereabouts, Sonam Raghuvanshi reappeared in a small dhaba (roadside eatery) in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, nearly 1,200 km away from the crime scene.

She appeared confused, weak, and claimed to have been sick for days. After contacting her family, she was handed over to the police and taken to a one-stop women’s center. What she said next shocked everyone: “I was drugged, I don’t know how I got here.”

 4: Police Say She’s Faking It – “A Poorly-Planned Drama”

    : UP Police’s Statement

According to ADG Amitabh Yash of UP STF, Sonam attempted to stage a fake abduction. He called her a "poor planner" whose lies unraveled during a brief but intense interrogation. Police suspect she orchestrated her husband’s murder, then deliberately vanished to mislead investigators.

She was handed over to Meghalaya Police on a three-day transit remand for further investigation in Shillong.

Police have arrested four men from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, believed to be contract killers hired to eliminate Raja. One of them, Raj Singh Kushwaha, a 21-year-old, is allegedly Sonam’s lover and the main co-conspirator.

The others include:

  • Akash Rajput (19)

  • Vishal Chauhan (22)

  • Anand Kurmi (26)

CCTV footage shows these suspects following Raja and Sonam in Meghalaya. One more accused is still on the run.

: One-Way Ticket, Missing Jewellery, Damaged Phone

According to Meghalaya Police:

  • Sonam booked only a one-way ticket to Meghalaya, raising suspicion that she never intended to return with her husband.

  • Raja was wearing ₹10 lakh worth of gold jewellery, which went missing after his murder.

  • Investigators recovered a blood-stained machete, a torn shirt, medicine strips, a raincoat, and Sonam’s damaged phone from the crime scene.

All signs point to a well-planned murder, not a random act.

 7: Sonam’s Defense – “I’m Being Framed”

    : What She’s Telling Police

Sonam claims:

“I was drugged. I don’t remember anything after taking medicine that night.”

Her family has also come forward, stating that their daughter is being framed and that a CBI inquiry should be launched. Her father maintains that she would never kill her husband and suspects foul play by third parties.

8: Lover Seen Consoling Victim’s Father – Sparks Outrage

In another disturbing revelation, Raj Kushwaha, the alleged lover and now arrested, was seen consoling Sonam’s father during Raja’s funeral.

This has enraged the public and Raja’s family. His mother and brother are demanding:

  • Capital punishment for Sonam and the accused.

  • A national-level investigation to ensure no one escapes justice.

9: What’s Next? CBI Probe or SIT Conclusion?

  • The Meghalaya Police is working with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to track digital evidence, including WhatsApp chats, travel bookings, and phone records.

  • Raja’s family is demanding a CBI inquiry, citing inter-state involvement and alleged police mishandling.
